Overall, Casino Royale remains one of the best of the series. However, Fleming seems to get out of his depth as a writer when Bond is talking to the head of French intelligence about the philosophy of good and evil, which comes across as childishly naïve and seems completely out of place in the novel. The book is peppered with information about Bond’s habits and vices, such as his preference for his drink to be “shaken, not stirred” (not the simple Vodka Martini of the films, but a concoction of his own design) and custom made cigarettes with three gold bands on the filter. Although the plot is on the whole straightforward, almost mundane, it has enough of a spark of originality and daring to pull the reader into the story and finishes with a bitter twist in its tail. It is one of the more polished of the books and the scenes in the casino are vividly painted. The operation was designed to discredit Le Chiffre, believing he would be killed as a traitor by the Russians and wipe their carefully built up French network. “It’s so important to remember these people who were trailblazers without even realizing it,” said Eartha Kitt’s daughter, Kitt Shapiro. The cover features a picture of Kitt with her back to the camera in a full-length sequined gown, arms akimbo and head turned coquettishly, gazing at us from over her shoulder, the way she’s typically remembered. It’s filled with obscure facts and photographs of America’s black glitterati dating from 1900 to 1980. Kitt is the cover image of Gainer’s new coffee table book, “Vintage Black Glamour,” which started as a Tumblr blog in 2011. It was one of those details that gets lost over time as we condense historical figures to a few soundbites and montages. “I’m in love with her, very much,” Davis told Jet magazine. Yes, long before the singer and actress worked with Davis on “ Anna Lucasta,” they dated in 1954 - “before he lost his eye,” Kitt told “Vintage Black Glamour” author Nichelle Gainer in 2001. 1: THE LIES-exploding from the blockbuster DC Rebirth event Legendary Wonder Woman writer Greg Rucka (BATWOMAN: ELEGY) makes his triumphant return to the character for the first time in years and joins renowned fantasy artist Liam Sharp (įor one of the most momentous stories in Diana's history Collects WONDER WOMAN #1, #3, #5, #7, #9, #11 and the WONDER WOMAN: REBIRTH one-shot. It's a vast panorama that shows how during the last twenty-five to thirty years gullibility as well as our innate greed make all of us accomplices in this never-ending pyramid scheme far away from any reality. Leonard DiCaprio gives another stellar performance of great intensity and even greater tragedy while this tale of corruption, greed and self-righteousness unfolds. Where Stone seems more in line with Bertold Brecht who considered theater (or in this case film) a moral institution, does Scorsese take the position of the omnipresent observer of the dark side of the American and in many cases the human dream. Sardonic in humor and unflinching in showing the depravity of its characters, it marks somewhat of a different approach to the world of stock-trading than Oliver Stone's "Wall Street". The suits might be more expensive but the people who wear them are just as sick and violent as their street-mob counterparts. "The Wolf of Wall Street" is the equivalent of something like "Good Fellas" or even more so "Casino" but set in the world of finance. Showy when it needs to be, but also quiet and contemplative. Brilliantly acted, superbly written and as one would expect from a picture by Martin Scorsese, it is a masterclass of directorial craft. Per usual, as I always feel this way about all Michael Eric Dyson books, I wish this book was mandatory reading in all schools (the irony here is there is a chapter covering race and racism being banned in school curriculums all over the country). even when the information being covered was rage inducing. I particularly enjoyed the way this book was written - for a nonfiction book it was very engaging and really kept my interest. The authors did a great job laying the basic foundations of the history of racism in this country through chapters that had a main focus, making it easy to cover certain topics without having to go into exhaustive detail. If you've been following my reviews you know how much I absolutely love his work because Dyson tells the hard truths that need to be said and in an unapologetic manner. But I expected nothing less going into this Michael Eric Dyson book. |
